Armenians of Tujunga
Monday, January 7, 2019According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Los Angeles is home to the largest Armenian population in all of America. The reasons that made Armenians move to the United States, and specifically Los Angeles, are various. But the fact is that America has one of the biggest Armenian Diasporas in the world.
For many years Little Armenia of Hollywood had the biggest Armenian community in Los Angeles. But in years this fact has changed. By 1988 many Armenians were moving from Hollywood to Glendale, Burbank and other areas. By the same year many newly arrived immigrants also were moving to Glendale and Burbank. Historically many of the Glendale Armenians were Iranian Armenians. In the 1980 U.S. Census the Armenians in Glendale were 25% of the Armenians in Los Angeles County.
Less developed than the other cities bordering Glendale, Tujunga has long been a haven for Armenians who want to stay close to the Glendale Armenian enclave, but not pay the exuberant costs of property associated with it, live in a town less populated and traffic congested, or simply live somewhere that has more trees, wildlife, and cleaner air. Similar to Burbank, Armenians have only begun settling in Tujunga in large numbers beginning in the mid to late 1990s. The city has dozens of small liquor stores, bakeries, and other family run, Armenian owned businesses that are the bread and butter for many families.
Lately, more and more Armenians have started moving to Tujunga from Glendale, mainly because the rental prices in Glendale are rising. Tujunga though is one of the best areas to live in as the air is clean and the water is comparatively clean than in the rest of LA. It's still a very unique community. Nowhere else in LA can you drive 5 minutes and play in the snow and be 20 minutes away from downtown LA. Tujunga is a hidden gem that's only improved overtime with diversity.
Armenians are even buying houses in Tujunga instead of just renting an apartment or a house, because the prices of houses are also convenient.
Thus, Tujunga has a small but unique Armenian community. The current population of Tujunga is approximately 65% white (among them Armenians), 22% Latino (mostly Mexican) and 7% Asian (mostly Filipino).
