Learning in the 21st century demands a dynamic STEAM program as well as an overall strong foundation within the field of science and technology. It is an honor to say that our students at Chamlian Armenian School have exceeded expectations when it comes to utilizing the multi-faceted resources readily available to them in order to reach their potential. They’ve done so by fully engaging in projects and presentations within these subjects.

This year, the success of our Science Department, headed by Ms. Lida Gevorkian, was on full display at the annual Los Angeles County Science Fair. Encouraged to seek inspiration beyond the classroom, our students tirelessly dedicated their free time in perfecting their science projects; an endeavor proven successful by the results of the L.A. Science Fair. Our Chamlian Tigers won first, second, honorable mention, as well as special awards in a plethora of different categories such as: Behavioral Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, Materials Science, Mathematics & Computer Science, Plant Biology & Physiology, and Product Science. Through their ambitious thirst to discover and create, our young scientists have taken their talents to the next level and accomplished their goals. We are very proud of them.

The ranking and winning projects are as follows:

• Jake Grigorian – First Place in Engineering Applications: Which Robotic Apparatus Toggles a Flag the Most Efficiently?
• Keghon Kasparian & Vahan Kordian – First Place in Materials Science: “Eggshells to Save Lives:” Lowering Rate of Combustion with Calcium Carbonate
• Gary Shirikchian – First Place in Plant Biology & Physiology: Gary’s Hydroponic Garden
• Shant Koutnouyan – Second Place in Environmental Management: A Cost Effective, Greener Solution to Dispose of Oil
• Michael Baghdassarian – Second Place in Product Science: What Isolated Substances in Manuka Honey can Preserve Raw Un-refrigerated and Unpasteurized Milk from Spoiling?
• Nareh Almassian – Honorable Mention in Non-Human Behavioral Science: The Combined Effect of Color and Fruit Stimulants on the Reaction of Drosophila Melanogaster.
• Rafael Enfiadjian – Honorable Mention in General Chemistry: Pesticide Levels in Organic and Non-Organic Produce.
• Isabella Kedikian – Honorable Mention in Mathematics & Computer Sciences: Can You Teach An Artificial Neural Network To Distinguish Between Images Of Cats And Dogs?

We applaud the time, effort, and dedication these students put in their science fair projects and we congratulate them on their well-deserved awards.

“I would like to extend our school’s gratitude to our Science Fair Coordinator and Science Teacher Mrs. Lida Gevorkian for her leadership and guidance throughout the entire process,” shared Dr. Talin Kargodorian, School Principal.

“We are extremely proud not only of her active leadership within the Science Fair, but for the fact that she won teacher of the year and that Chamlian Armenian School has won school of the year. Science Fairs provide invaluable experiences for students. These fairs provide cross curricular learning opportunities for students integrating multiple subjects into one project, such as English, Math, Science, as well as critical thinking, problem solving, analysis, computer/technology and public speaking skills. The hands on learning experiences Science Fairs provide for our students are necessary for our 21st century learners,” added Kargodorian.
