Chamlian and ‘We Are Gyumri’ Give the Gift of Reading to Nanulik School
Tuesday, June 4, 2019GLENDALE—Through a school-wide book drive and a generous donation from the library, Vahan & Anoush Chamlian Armenian School collected over 1,500 books for youth in Armenia. The books, in both Armenian and English, will be donated to the Nanulik Kindergarten and Day School in Gyumri. The “We Are Gyumri” Committee, based in California, contacted Chamlian for assistance when the Gyumri based staff and volunteers of the Shirvanian Youth Center and the Nanulik School collaboratively identified a need that required immediate attention—children’s books for the Nanulik School.
When approached, the principal, Dr. Talin Kargodorian, quickly provided the school’s support. “It is not only an honor, but our duty to ensure the continued advancement and success of our Homeland. What better way to inspire a bright future than by expanding the horizon of our young Armenian students through books? The recognition of the importance of reading gives way to new discoveries and endless possibilities. The sharing of ideas and innovative platform that books provide contribute greatly to the society they are valued in. We are proud to have played a role in such a vital endeavor,” said Dr. Kargodorian.
“We Are Gyumri” Committee member Garine Izmirlian noted, “Collaborating with Chamlian on this project was truly heartwarming. We received an incredible number of books donated by the school, by the students, and by the families. Through these books, the children in the Diaspora will be connected to their peers in Gyumri. The efforts and accomplishments of the students of Chamlian in collecting so many books demonstrate a small fiber of the thread that connects us to our Homeland, and our Homeland to the Diaspora.”
The “We Are Gyumri” Committee, in collaboration with the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Western United States Homeland Initiative Program partnered with the Orange County chapter of the Knights and Daughters of Vartan and the Armenian Territorial Development Fund to support the renovation of Nanulik Kindergarten and Day School in Gyumri. Since the completion of the renovation, the committee has strived to support the kindergarten and day school in meeting basic necessities. The first initiative was to send first aid supplies to care for the children and students. The second effort was the grand support in providing books for the school. The 1,500 donated books have been shipped to the Shirvanian Youth Center and upon arrival will be delivered to Nanulik School.
