Artur Aleksanyan Beats Azerbaijani Rival, Becomes World Champion
Wednesday, January 22, 2020Armenian Olympian Artur Aleksanyan, a Greco-Roman wrestler, defeated Azerbaijan’s Orkhan Nuriyev in the 213 lbs event at the 2020 Grand Prix de France Henri Deglane in Nice, France.
According to the National Olympic Committee, Aleksanyan beat his Azerbaijani opponent in the final bout, 3 to 1, claiming four consecutive victories and winning the champion’s title.
An Olympic Champion (2016) and bronze medalist (2012), a three-time World Champion (2014, 2015, and 2017), and a four-time European Champion (2012, 2013, 2014, and 2018), Aleksanyan is Armenia’s second Olympic gold medalist since regaining independence in 1991. Nicknamed “White Bear,” he is one of the most renowned Armenian athletes of the 21st century.
Additionally, Armenian wrestlers Rudik Mkrtchyan (121 lbs) and Karapet Chalyan (169 lbs) won second place in their respective weight classes, and Gevorg Gharibyan (132 lbs), Slavik Galstyan (147 lbs), Malkhas Amoyan (158 lbs), and Ruben Gharibyan (180 lbs) won third in the tournament.
