Armenia Designates January 27 as Memorial Day
Tuesday, January 20, 2026
Parliament adopted at second reading a bill co-authored by Vice Speaker MP Ruben Rubinyan and MP Gegham Nazaryan designating January 27 as a public holiday honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for Armenia.
January 27 will be designated as a non-working day—the Memorial Day of those who fell in defense of the homeland.
The bill passed with 69 votes in favor and 15 against.
The co-authors of the bill previously explained that various other memorial days commemorate specific historical events, whereas it would be preferable to have a single Memorial Day honoring all men and women of the military who fell in the line of duty for the country.
Following the adoption of the law, Ruben Rubinyan stated:
“At our request, the President will sign the law at the earliest opportunity so that it may take effect within the year. As a result, the upcoming January 27 will be observed as a non-working day. We are grateful to the President for his understanding. Glory to those who gave their lives; peace to those who carry their legacy, to their loved ones, and to us all.”
