DSPS Counselor - Long Beach, CA

ABOUT THE POSITION 

Long Beach Community College District is currently seeking one full-time tenured DSPS Counselor Professor commencing with the Fall 2025 semester. This assignment also includes curriculum development, participation in the shared governance process through work in normal professional activities, committee work, and student activities. The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Trades, Technology & Community Learning campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, on-line or off campus and is subject to change as needed. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

RESPONSIBLITIES:

• Apply DSPS policies and procedures, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations, requirements pertaining to compliance with section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act for website accessibility and Electronic and information (EIT), Title 5 and California Education Code Regulations and federal and state law as related to access issues in a community college setting. 
• Determine eligibility for DSPS office through direct evaluation, by observation, or from careful review of documentation presented, as well as training in the proper use of various assessment techniques. 
• Evaluate functional limitations, skills and abilities of students in order to design and implement appropriate disability-related accommodations and recommend the use of appropriate assistive technology hardware and software. 
• Implement adaptive/assistive technology services that facilitate access to electronic information and educational programs for students with various disabilities, and of assistive technology application to assist in accommodating disability-related educational limitations. 
• Apply knowledge of assistive technologies to provide services unique to the needs of students who are blind or have low vision, deaf and hard of hearing or those with learning differences/neurodiverse students.  
• Coordinate various assistive technology-related projects and tasks concurrently, within multiple locations, and manage time wisely.   
• Develop assistive technology curriculum for specific learning needs of students with disabilities.
• Manage and evaluate test proctoring services and determine appropriate assistive technologies for use in testing based on student educational limitations.  
• Work with faculty and staff to support the assistive technology needs for students with disabilities. 
• Serve as liaison and resource person in the areas of assistive technology and disability related issues for college personnel and distance education.  

Candidates must meet one of the following qualifications item 1  or items 2 & 4 or items 3 & 4 or the equivalent 

1. Master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling

OR

1. Master’s degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, 

1. OR a Bachelor’s degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT);

1. AND either fifteen or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically related to people with disabilities, OR completion of six semester units, OR the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a postsecondary Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) Program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities, OR two years of fulltime experience, 

OR  the equivalent, in one or more of the following:

1. Counseling for students with disabilities; or
2. Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge of and ability to apply DSPS policies and procedures, Title 5 and California Education Code Regulations, and federal and state laws related to access issues in a community college setting.  
• Strong knowledge of adaptive/assistive technologies that facilitate access to electronic information and educational programs for students with various disabilities, and of assistive technology applications to assist in accommodating disability-related educational limitations. 
• Demonstrated ability to instruct and train students in the usage of assistive technology to accommodate disability-related educational limitations either in a classroom or workshop setting.  
• Ability to direct many projects and tasks concurrently, within multiple locations and manage time wisely.
• Demonstrates knowledge of section 508 and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) as it applies to higher education community college.  
• Demonstrated knowledge of assistive technologies unique to the needs of students who are blind or have low vision, deaf and hard of hearing or those with learning differences/neurodiverse students.
• Has experience creating workshops or programs for students and faculty addressing accessibility and Universal Design of Learning (UDL).

Evidence of a sensitivity, understanding, and ability to manage the classroom environment AND effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
